KRONFELD Komment
Dear friends and family members,
As many of you know, my father, David S. Kronfeld, died last December
after a decade-long bout with lymphocytic leukemia. We are all
grateful that he lived longer than expected. Speaking for myself, I
often hear his voice making a wry comment about all sorts of things.
Prodded a bit by a friend of mine, I decided to raise money for the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, in Dad's memory. If you would like to
make a contribution, please use the link in this email to donate
online quickly & securely:
http://www.active.com/donate/tntil/tntilASK58
You will receive email confirmation of your donation and I will be
notified as soon as you make your donation. Many thanks for any
level of support.
By the way, the fundraising also involves something that Dad, as an
avid bike rider, would be keen on. I'm training to ride a bike 100
miles in late September. In fact, I'm riding the silver and red
Motobecane racer that he bought about 30 years ago.
Please forward this email to those who might have known Dad, but
would not be on my list of e-mail addresses. Best wishes, and may
you be in good health,
Andreas Kronfeld

Our Tongan genes (1/8th for me ) are not royal, except in the sense that the King or Chief serviced every maiden on his island -- 3 islands and 3 studs. With infrequent legal exceptions, the stud does not count and, as they say, paternity is a matter of opinion. The royal lines run through the mother in Polynesia (as with the Jews).
I am related to Alex Kronfeld who responded to your
website #14 in 2002. His grandfather Alexander Kronfeld was my grandfather's
(Charles) brother. I have tried to email him but the email address doesn't
appear to work. I have more information. Thanks if you know anything.

this llink regarding the background of the Robert Kronfeld Challenge Cup: http://acro.harvard.edu/SOARING/JL/Awards/kronfeld_weinholtz.html
Gliding as a sport began around 1911, by which time there were aeroplane rallies all over Europe, for no better reason than a few German schoolboys wanted to fly but had no money. They built very crude gliders and launched themselves off hills to glide down into the valley below; but they enjoyed themselves. Shortly after the end of World War One, gliding started again in Germany as a continuation of the pre-war "hops and flops" in the Rhon Mountains, but there was now greater incentive because of the prohibition on building powered aircraft in the Treaty of Versailles. This encouraged technical schools and universities to design and build gliders, which led in turn to the formation of Akafliegs in which engineering students were allowed to take longer over obtaining a degree if they fully involved themselves in glider design and construction in the Akaflieg. Between 1920 and 1980 the Akaflieg Darmstadt designed, built and test flew no less than 40 aircraft, mostly giliders, all in some way advancing existing aeronautical technology. By the late twenties gliding had developed a following and a momentum of its own with effective gliders and experienced pilots who were ambitious for greater achievements. Thermals were 'discovered' by a meteorologist Professor Walter Georgii. He knew that birds found upcurrents under cumulus clouds. |
Below Robert Kronfeld in the cockpit of his Wien. The double curvatures were made of skinning with small pieces of plywood.
Above The Wien being launched by V-shaped rubber rope (bungy launch). Normally 4-6 runners would pull on each rope end. |
Then in the summer of 1929 Kronfeld flew his Wien 143 km for a new world record , starting from the Wasserkuppe he flew into the lift on the leading edge of a thunderstorm, rose with it and used the storm front as an aerial hill. The Wien had a 19m span with aspect ratio 19.6. The wood used for the construction was high grade spruce 2 mm birch plywood.
The year 1930 was important for two reasons. Wolf Hirth took his Musterle to the USA and soared in blue thermals over flat land and Kronfeld made himself a practical variometer on the vacuum flask principle. As a result of Hirth's American flights, younger pilots set out to explore the air away from the hills and discovered that pure distance flying was more possible than had been thought.
|
The cockpit and wing root of Kronfeld's giant 30m span - Austria
|
The 1930's were the golden years of distance flying.
In good summer weather pilots flew as far as possible each
day.
The extreme glider built at this time was Kronfeld's 'Austria'. Many varieties of camber changing flaps have been tried out on gliders. The Austria with its 30m span and very slow high lift wing section had the ailerons arranged so that they could be raised for improving the speed as well as being drooped. The Austria also had rudder air brakes. By 1939 gliding was well established as a serious form of sport flying all over the world with many countries designing and manufactuirng their own products. And the rest they say is history.... |

MESSAGE: I am a member of the Oxford Gliding Club in England, and our Club is
the LIVING MEMORIAL to Robert Kronfeld the famous gliding pioneer of
the 1930s.
Robert Kronfeld came to England around 1933/34 when flying in Germany was no
longer possible due to his Jewish background. He had previously designed
and built the "Austria" which, with a 30 metre wing span, was the
largest glider in the world, a record that stood for 70 years. He was
also a pioneer of thermal flying techniques, covering great distances over
flat country in an era when gliders had previously only flown in the winds
blowing over hills.
Our gliding club was formed in 1937 as the Oxford University and City Gliding
Club, and Robert Kronfeld was its very first Chief Flying Instructor. He
was very active in the Club's development between 1937-39, before the onset of
war forced all non-military flying to cease. Kronfeld survived the war
but was killed in February 1948 whilst flying an experimental flying-wing type
glider, a picture of which can be found at http://www.gsansom.demon.co.uk/vfaero/oneoff/gal5601.jpg
Post-war, our Gliding Club remained dormant until 1951. It may never
have been resurrected if it had not been the express wish of Robert Kronfeld's
widow Margaret. When asked how best the great man should be remembered,
she said at once "RE-START THE OXFORD GLIDING CLUB"
I am proud to be a member of the Club in which he was such a driving force in
its early days.
MESSAGE: Hello Fellow Kronfelds,
My name is Simon Kronfeld, Grandson of Robert Kronfeld, the Gliding Pioneer.
Was very interested to come across your site, and was looking to see how we
fit in, as I believe there is a link to the Kronfelds from Samoa
For your information, my father and I are keen glider pilots in the UK and
currently both hold a Gold 'C' certificates.
I have a younger brother Nicholas Kronfeld.
I am also due to be married in Sept of this year, and who knows, this may lead
to a future generation of Kronfelds.
Would be interested if someone has a family tree diagram somewhere.
Best Wishes

This story contrasts my two grand-fathers, both German traders in the South
Pacific, regarding their views on relationships with women
On a visit to Apia, Samoa, in 1973, I obtained a history of Samoa written for
Catholic schools. One section especially interested me, because it
explained the reason for my existence, which was secondary to making money for
Godefroy's, the huge Hamburg company that colonized many of the South Pacific
islands. According to this history book, the company encouraged its German
traders to befriend the native women in order to promote sales. No
comment was offered in the book about the personal pleasure incidental to the
trading enterprize.
Gustav Kronfeld, I heard many times, was extremely strict about romantic
liaisons and insisted on the confinement of sex to marriage. He deplored
illegitimacy to the point of not accepting persons born out of wedlock.
The family's most horrendous example was his rejection of Otto Wolfgramm (my
mother's uncle) as a son-in-law. Gustav's daughter, my generation's beloved
Aunt Minna, waited 12 months after the death of her mother before she married
Otto. By then Minna was 55 years of age.
A comic example is Isi Kronfeld's sexual caprice when in jail in Apia in the
early 1920s. Isi was Gustav's fourth son. He was a lawyer jailed for
insurance fraud, which he blamed entirely on his partner, proclaiming his own
innocence. The story goes that Isi spent much of his jail time under a
coconut tree by the beach, where he was visited by a woman. Every time a
glamorous woman came to Auckland from Samoa, we children could overhear
gossip, "Is this Isi's woman."
In 1973, Erika, Andreas, Mercedes and I were invited to dinner in a gorgeous
house overlooking Apia. Our hostess, whose name is well-known to me but
I forget at the moment, was charming and still beautiful. After dinner,
looking out across the harbor she pointed out a stretch of beach and coconut
trees and said we call that Isi's jail. She continued, "I guess
when I came up to Auckland you wondered if I was Isi's girl friend." She
was laughing. She said, "You know the difference between Auckland
and Apia -- you argue about which woman, and we argue about which tree."
When Nero came to New Zealand, he was rejected by Isi and most of the
Kronfeld's. My brave Aunty Jeff, your grand-mother, was the exception. She
visited Nero then embraced him.
Gustav Kronfeld's attitude was extreme and probably atypical. My other
grandfather, Alfred Schultz, was a blue-eyed blonde sent out from Hamburg in
his late teens. He worked for Deutsche Plantation und Handlung Gesellschaft
(usually called "DPHG") as a manager in Vavau (Tonga), where both my
mother and father were born in the same house, 18 years apart. Alfred was
married three times, the second to Charlotte Wolfgramm, my grand-mother who
was German-Tongan. He also seemed to have spawned numerous other
children, a few of whom turned up in Auckland and visited their half-sister,
my mother. Being the boss-trader on an island seems to have had some of
the same privileges as being a Polynesian chief. In 1944 Alfred was the German
company's boss on Swain's Island, a northern part of American Samoa. He
was taken prisoner and interned in the USA. He was repatriated to
Germany in 1946, where he found war-torn Hamburg no longer like the glorious
place he left forty year's earlier.
My two German trader grand-fathers appear to have had quite different ideas
about carrying out the company's policy of befriending the natives.
Cheers, David

Hello Sue
The only bell that this message rings is that Gustav Kronfeld came from
Thorn, which has wobbled between East Prussia and Poland. There's a
Kronfeld family in Herndon, VA, that came from the Ukraine, and this may
have been a more general migration eastward.
I have an anecdote involving Thorn, which I wrote last weekend to my
godmother, Olive Malia Solomon (The daughter of Fritz and Annie Malia
Kronfeld, sister of Andy, hence grand0aunt of Josh and Sascha). I'll
copy
and send it to you.

Hi family. Abit about myself and where I fit in with the New Zealand Kronfeld clan.
Born in Paraparaumu, North Island, I come from the wing of the Auckland Kronfelds that immigrated south to the Wellington area. I left school after the 6th form and took up reception work for a timber and hardware company. After one year of that I fell upon an opportunity to go for a fly in a two seater Cessna aircraft. From that day in 1984 I have not looked back. I moved to Wellington and took on a higher paying job with a computer company and that financed me to complete my Commercial Pilot Licence. I then journeyed south to Wanaka in 1988 and flew amongst the mountains to destination Milford Sound. I flew commercial scenic flights in and out of Milford Sound and around the South Island until in 1994 I pursued marriage, children - Laetitia & Melanie - and a partnership in a fishing and hunting guide business.
Gerald and I are now based 3km out of Wanaka, on a 7 acre property with room for family and the occasional client. www.flyfishhunt.co.nz

11/02/03 From David Kronfeld, Kiwi
drain-brainer, 46 years in USA, everyday BBC listener and www lurker.
People from different locations often climb different mountains, and each thinks
their's is the pinnacle, because every direction goes down. Case in point,
you're on the wait-and-watch mountain, and I'm sounding the avalanche horn.
How did I get here? I read NZ newspapers, 1935-1939, about the attempts
of Baldwin then Chamberlain to appease Hitler. The current German request
for one more inspection reminds me that they did not undertand Hitler until it
was too late, so I'm not convinced that they will understand Saddam Hussein
until it's too late. When a guy is both belligerant and wonky, how long is it
sensible to negotiate?
In fact I would favor one more delay if IF! Germany or France would assume the
main responsibility to the UN of controlling SH and neutralizing Iraq's weapons
of mass destruction (wmds) before they fall into the hands of Mohommedins who
aspire to complete His mission. The combination of Saudi money and Irag
wmds does not bade well for the other two streams from Abraham.
The USA has nothing to gain, indeed much to lose in many ways, by committing
pre-emptive war on SH and Iraq. This decision is like elective surgery for
cancer -- you need to be convinced that it's necessary. In regard to the
depth of this conviction, who do you trust most? The basis of a
representative democracy is recognition that everybody cannot be adequately
informed and understanding of all the information required to make crucial
decisions.
I'm the worst one -- branded a maverick all my life -- to pledge total
allegiance with my vote, but I have more thsn usual trust with Bush's team
because of its open diversity of interpretations and opinions. (What UA
President but George W has ever let a Secretary of State openly oppose him on a
major issue -- affirmative action in the University of Michigan.) The
argument about Iraq among the Bush advisors has been out in the open, and in the
end Bush gave the nod to his strongest appeaser and do-gooder, a Jamaican.
At what point should appeasement end? Today's Germans blot out Hitler. The
French continue to resent US intervention in the torture of the Algerian war.
And has New Zealand forgotten the 'yellow peril'?
Like it or not, NZ has been protected by the USA since 1945. NZ was not saved by
the Mother country but by a big sister who shares its heritage and values, at
least since the Magna Carta. An antidote to anti-Americanism is the
thought of Godzone as a Japanese colony.
I used to peer over a sandhill at Rangitoto and see a Jap sub rise out of the
sea and aim its gun at me. Now you look out from Torbay at Kiwis,
nationalists versus defectors, sailing for the America's Cup. Who should
be thanked for this freedom -- Queen Victoria?
Today there are other perils: decimation of NZ's livestock industries (3
guys with F&M snot on their handkerchiefs could do it); gas the final of the
Rugby Cup in Sydney; another big bomb on Mitsubishi . . .
All of us recognize the dangers. Perhaps I'm more fearful than most of
Islam. The comparative religion club at St John's College, Brisbane, met
Tuesday nights. In 1949 I chose Islam for my chat because Med is credited
with instilling hot blood into the Arabian, hence the Thoroughbred. After the
sweet and gentle throw back to Ibraham met his power-and-strife in Medina and
got clobbered by the Baddies from Mecca, he became a warrior who inspired two
centuries of Islamic expansion from Spain to Indonesia.
"Oil," said Chris while at Boston U, "Do you think it's
important?" He was exasperated with my badgering about the utter
futility of his PhD
dissertation on the ethics of religions. Yes, I said. "How long
have people been fighting over oil?" Maybe 100 years, I said.
"How long have
they been fighting over religion?" At least since Mohommed, I said,
800 AD.
Oil from Saudi Arabia is the single most powerful economic force in the world
today. US intelligrence declares that that Saudi oil money is being used
to pave the way for Islamic expansion.
The Brits should never have left Arabia to the Saudi family. These bandits took
the city by force at midnight about 1900 and again by hardnose in 1926. The
Brits left them as Kings and masters of the 19th century's greatest natural
resource. (Should the USA have appeased Kansas to the James boys, King Jesse and
Prince Frank?)
Would you agree that oil and wmds are the two main material mechanisms of the
world's idealogical predicament? If so, I have a temporary solution. Allow
Germany its delay at the UN and let it assume responsibility for controlling SH
and Irag. The US army would then be released from that task, and it could take
out the Saudi family and give Arabia to Yasser Arafat.
Are you still worried about George W?

Dear Paula (Sue, David,and Alex),
Somehow I stumbled upon the Kronfeld family tree web site, and read all
of the messages/stories posted. I don't know if we are from the same
Kronfeld family, but since I'm very interested in finding out any information
about my ancestors, I thought I'd give this a try. My father's name was
Mervin Kronfeld. He was born in 1918 and passed away just last December.
His father's name was Abraham and he immigrated from Roumania. I think his
father's father was Leon or Leo? Anyway, some other relatives' names I'm
aware of are: Phil, Cye, Morris(?), Sylvia (all Kronfeld). Also, I have a
very old picture of someone with the name Matilda! Kronfeld on the back.
I would like to hear back from you if you are aware of any possible
connections. Thanks much!
Suzy Kronfeld
Hi Suzy
This is where the net plays a major part in research.
When my Father, Anthony Kronfeld researched our New Zealand Kronfeld tree,
he found it almost impossible to stretch the lineage beyond Gustav
Kronfeld's parents. We are missing a whole chapter to where we
actually
relate to your Kronfeld path as well as Alex, David and Paula's Kronfeld
link up..
I can only say that we are related in sharing the same surname, and our
ancestors have left us with very little to go on. The benefit about this
whole exercise is the fact that Kronfeld is a worldwide name...!!
Where abouts are you located?
Just to inform you my cousins, located in - and with email links -
http://www.flyfishhunt.co.nz/kronfeld/treedavidkron.html
reside on the East Coast of the States.
I email them often. Uncle David is the oldest living male of our NZ
Kronfeld's.
